French, born in 1964
Philippe Parreno’s in situ installations analyse the foundations of our times by playing on similarities in apparent contradictions. He creates environments where the hierarchy between artist and viewer vanishes. In doing so, he reverses the relationship between creator and viewer, who becomes the work’s true protagonist.
Parreno plays with different materials in his works. Considering the exhibition as a medium in its own right, he explores the space between physical reality and fictional construction. The French artist wonders about these interstices conducive to creativity. “I've always liked anything trans: transversal, transcultural, transdisciplinary,” he says. His works are perpetually changing.
Parreno's work was exhibited for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage du Temps”) show at the Tri Postal in Lille.
