Jean-Luc
Moulène

French, born in 1955

For nearly 30 years, Jean-Luc Moulène has produced unique, unclassifiable works that continuously call their own status into question. His belief that his work is characterised by "absurd evidence, horrible revelation, laughter" attests to his spirit of self-derision.

In the 1990s, Moulène took photographs of objects. He takes a cold, clinical perspective, which is exemplified by the "Disjunctions" series. He gained renown with "Strike Objects", a photo series on how workers have taken over the production tool. In the late 1990s, he began making sculptures, installations and drawings. Rejecting aesthetic images, Moulène ironically and humorously experiments with form. His unlikely objects, such as assemblages resulting from an erosion process or sculptures based on 3D modelling, are organised like a cryptic, whimsical cabinet of curiosities.

His works in the Pinault Collection are especially evocative of his last period. They were first exhibited in 2015 at the "Slip of the Tongue" show at the Punta della Dogana."
