Andres Serrano's unsparing work does not shy away from controversy. Addressing social and societal issues in the United States, the photographer paints a provocative portrait of rural Middle America. In series of photographs on sensitive issues such as religion, guns and sexuality, the American artist challenges conventions and questions the notion of the sacred head-on.
His works’ composition is figurative and theatrical. “I use photography like a painter uses his canvas,” he says. His very large-format photographs try to provoke the viewer by staging Catholic blasphemies. Christ’s Passion exhibited in bodily fluids, as in the emblematic Piss Christ, is one of his favourite themes.
Serrano's photographs in the Pinault Collection were presented for the first time during the 2008 “Passage du Temps” (“Passage of Time”) show at the Tri Postal in Lille.
