French, born in 1936
A forerunner of French Pop Art, Martial Raysse creates images that transcend the banality of life. Strongly influenced by advertising, he turns away from the art of reality to reveal the underlying vitality of everyday objects and images. His thinking has evolved throughout his career and taken various forms, from painting to neon, assemblage and video.
A member of the New Realism movement in the early 1960s, Raysse was quickly recognized for his trailblazing work and represented France at the 1966 Venice Biennale. Calling his interest in pop art into question after the events of May 68, he quickly turned away from "formal aesthetics".
His works in the Pinault Collection were exhibited for the first time at the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi. After the retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2014, the Palazzo Grassi gave him his first major solo show in Italy in 2015.
