After the comprehensive show "Where Are We Going?", "Sequence 1" focused on a specific side of the collection: sequencing had become a form of representation. It centred on the presence of the artist's "hand" and the necessary dialogue between painting or sculpture and art history. Martial Raysse's mythological paintings were exhibited alongside Richard Prince's appropriations, Subodh Gupta's monumental installations and Louise Lawler's hanging photographs.
An ode to the artists’ skill and ability to constantly update their creativity, “Sequence 1” ushered in a series of more experimental exhibitions of works from the Pinault Collection.
