Prince

American, born in 1949

Richard Prince appropriates and decontextualises images from the mass media, advertising and entertainment of the 1970s. By manipulating these codes of mass consumption, first in painting and collage, then through photography, he explores the definition of American identity and delivers a satirical chronicle.

Specialising in the photographing of pre-existing pictures, Prince is mainly known for his work on iconic American figures such as the cowboy, the biker or the pin-up girl. By freeing himself from copyrights, he joined the trend of appropriationism alongside Sherrie Levine and Barbara Kruger and tends to reshape the idea of the authorship of artworks.

Prince’s works in the Pinault Collection were exhibited for the first time at the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
