Wilhelm
Sasnal

Polish, born in 1972

Wilhelm Sasnal’s paintings are subjective archives of the modern world. Most often working from existing documents - images taken from films, found on the Internet or in the press, photographs of his surroundings, famous paintings - the Polish artist approaches the visual world without judgment or hierarchy. He adds a very graphic touch while certain original elements are erased, blurred or deformed.

Trained in architecture, Wilhelm Sasnal debuted his work in the 1990s with the Ladnie Group collective, endeavouring to represent the contemporary environment in all its banality. He then developed his own eclectic, individual work, using photography, video and painting, which he considers a “natural and primal activity”. Through painting, he confers on his images a new and unexpected temporality and meaning.

Wilhelm Sasnal’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi.
