Robert
Gober

American, born in 1954

Creating autobiographical works where cribs, human limbs and large-scale installations co-exist, Robert Gober connects his childhood memories to objects that are at first glance harmless but look disturbing. By giving form to the evocative images that haunt his mind, his shape-shifting works explore sexuality, religion, human relationships and nature.

Gober’s evocation of memory is intertwined with a traditional approach. His pieces are the outcome of painstaking handiwork involving a wide range of materials, such as wax, plaster, newsprint, as well as technical processes. His outstanding sculptural skills enable him to express a form of alienation of the object with unsettling realism.

Gober's works in the Pinault Collection were on display during the "Sequence 1" show (2007) at the Palazzo Grassi and the "Mapping the Studio" (2010) and "Dancing with Myself" (2018) exhibitions at the Punta della Dogana.
