Martin
Kippenberger

German, 1953 — 1997

The work of Martin Kippenberger is profoundly unclassifiable. From the end of the 1970s, he produced in all directions, in large quantities, with no hierarchy. Through his proliferation and his eclecticism, - painting, sculpture, installation, engraving, collage, but also music, writing, and exhibition curation - the German artist’s work is the very definition of diverse, and his approach entirely unique.

Hoping to be “the best second-class painter,” Martin Kippenberger formulated the idea early in his artistic career that he would not adopt one identifiable style. From then on, he never stopped borrowing from all sides, experimenting with all media and varying his modes of production: evidenced for example by the work Lieber Maler, male mir (1981), which he had produced by a poster painter.

Martin Kippenberger’s work in the Pinault Collection, was shown for the first time during the 2009 exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi.
