Claude
Cahun

French, 1894 — 1954

A plastic artist, photographer, theater figure and activist, Claude Cahun is one of the rare women to have been part of the Surrealist art scene in Paris. Although her multifaceted body of work includes poems, political writings and articles published in several French magazines, she is now mostly known for her portraits, most of which were created together with her partner, Suzanne Malherbe.

From 1910 to 1954, Claude Cahun created a highly intimate and autobiographical oeuvre that remains to this day unique and unclassifiable. Unknown for years, her photographic work finally gained recognition for its originality and power and is now considered a landmark of Surrealism.

The work of Claude Cahun, who was both an iconic figure of art in the first half of the 20th century and a forerunner of contemporary aesthetics, was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
