Stingel

Italian, born in 1956

Rudolf Stingel studies the relationships between abstraction and figuration and between motifs and texture through the themes of memory and time. The resulting artworks are executed in various mediums and in different styles, from hyperrealism to abstraction. Each has a participatory dimension and invites viewers to a sensory experience that goes beyond the sole visual link.

From 1991 onwards, Stingel starts creating ‘carpets’ that cover whole rooms from floor to ceiling. These in situ artworks expand beyond the frame since they become the environment itself. In 2013, the artist was invited to take over Palazzo Grassi in this manner on the occasion of a solo show. Another part of his work consists in realistic photographic portraits, which attest to the great variety of his artistic approach.

The Rudolf Stingel artworks held in the Pinault Collection were first presented in 2006 at the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
