Anselmo
Italian, born in 1934
A self-taught painter, Giovanni Anselmo creates his first photograph in 1965: My Shadow Towards the Infinity of the Peak of Stromboli During Dawn is a revelation that sets him apart from traditional forms of artistic expression. With his artworks and research, Anselmo joins the Arte Povera group in 1967 and develops an original sculptural practice. Direzione (1968), which is held by the Pinault Collection, is a prime example of his work.
The artist likes to create tension between raw materials such as stone, wood and iron, and vegetal matter. This results in a precarious and highly symbolic equilibrium that highlights the existential relationship between man, nature and the cosmos.
The Giovanni Anselmo artworks held in the Pinault Collection were first presented in 2006 at the Where Are We Going exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
