The author of an original and multifaceted oeuvre, Cy Twombly is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures and photographs span more than 50 years and demonstrate a unique artistic approach that does not reject figuration or abstraction.
At the end of the 1950s, Twombly's oeuvre comprises graffiti and scratches on paper, alongside various inscriptions (letters, words, numbers). The repetition of the gesture and its scriptural character are later expressed through different mediums, from drawing to collage. Cy Twombly develops his prolific oeuvre on the margin of American art's leading currents: beyond debates on figure, and building on his strong link with European culture, he chooses a form of continuity between past and present, as shown through his frequent forays into Greek and Latin mythology.
