Austrian, 1947 — 2012

Through mainly sculptural work, Franz West explores ways to approach an art object. Deeply rooted in Viennese Actionism and Performance Art of the 1960s and 1970s, his complex anthropomorphic creations invite viewers to interact with them. Prompted to touch, handle and use the works, they become active participants in them.

In 2007, the Palazzo Grassi commissioned one of West's famous furniture sculptures, a functional installation where visitors can rest, to create a "sculptural shelter" in the museum. The result is the bold Oasis environment based on the rich past of the Palazzo Grassi and its location on the Grand Canal.

West's works in the Pinault Collection were first displayed at the Palazzo Grassi during the "Sequence 1" show in 2007. MoMA hosted his first solo show in 1997.
