Untitled and Lemur Head

2006

Kiosk installation - wood, aluminium sheets, Plexiglas, chandelier, steel (Untitled, 2006) Painted aluminum (Lemur Head)

Untitled. 2006 (approx.): 530 x 600 x 600 cm (208 11/16 x 236 1/4 x 236 1/4 in.) Lemur Head (approx.): 300 x 100 x 150 cm (118 1/8 x 39 3/8 x 59 1/16 in.)

Untitled and Lemur Head features two major, sharply contrasting visions of the installation. Rudolf Stingel embraces the straight line by putting a cubic kiosk on four steel pillars, while Franz West takes a fluid, biomorphic approach in Lemur Head. But superimposing the two works creates harmony: white apparitions made of metal and pierced by gaping openings, Untitled and Lemur Head come together in a reflection on the perception of art.

In the square in front of the Palazzo Grassi, West and Stingel collaborated on a composite piece that put their mature work into perspective. While West's celebrated Lemur Heads series marks the height of his experimental approach, Stingel's Untitled is part of a series of monumental installations aiming to disrupt our experience of the art object.

A brilliant introduction to the exhibition "Sequence 1" held in 2007 at the Palazzo Grassi, Untitled and Lemur Head by Rudolf Stingel and Franz West is in the Pinault Collection.
