Sammelwand/Collecting Wall

2007

30 drawings and collages in various media from 1972-2007

Variable dimensions

Like a naturalist’s display case cluttered with natural curiosities - shells, rocks and flints - Sammelwand/Collecting Wall is a group of 30 collages made between 1972 and 2007 in various formats and colours. Each collage features characters or items from magazines integrated onto a painted support.

The Sammelwand/Collecting Wall assemblage is one of Franz West's Collecting Walls, which draws on his childhood memories to revive the vision of a wall covered with art reproductions. A fascinating theme that abolishes the distance between the works themselves, the wall becomes the basis of an installation that unites each individuality.

Sammelwand/Collecting Wall by Franz West was first exhibited in 2007 during the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi, where viewers could see it from the inflatable mattresses of the Oasis sculpture furniture, reproducing an environment of contemplation dear to the artist. It is in the Pinault Collection.
