Modelle für Brückenköpfe im Wiener Stadtpark (Models for the Bridge Heads in Stadtpark, Vienna)

Four spectral shapes kneaded in plaster and papier-mâché stand on rods attached to a single base. A simple slit in the lower part is enough to hint at a schematic yet expressive face.

These distorted, formless sculptures brought together under the title Modelle für Brückenköpfe im Wiener Stadtpark belong to the Lemurenköpfe (Lemur Heads) series begun in 1987. Franz West, the sculptor, would later call them Larven (larvae). The deliberately crude faces do not have any predefined contours. Rather, they take their source from the vague shapes suggested by clouds or stones.

Modelle für Brückenköpfe im Wiener Stadtpark will be exhibited for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the “Au-dela de la couleur” ("Beyond Colour") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in June 2021.
