Niele
Toroni

Swiss, born in 1937

For over fifty years, Niele Toroni’s “Travail-Peinture” has not deviated from his working method of aligning imprints of a no. 50 paintbrush on various supports – paper, canvas, glass, wall. These imprints, of a different colour with each work, are repeated in quincunx patterns and at regular 30 cm intervals, until they cover the entire support.

Co-founder of the BMPT group in 1967, Toroni chose the repetitive ability of the dot and continued to use it throughout his life. Minimalist and precise, his works reveal a constant exploration of art’s objectivity whilst questioning the notion of authenticity and the importance of the figure of the artist.

Recent monographic exhibitions dedicated to Niele Toroni were held at the Paris Modern Art Museum (2015), at the Swiss Institute of New York (2015) and at Villa Pisani Bonetti in Vicenza (2011). His work was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
