Imprints of paintbrush no. 50 repeated at regular intervals of 30 cm

1991

Red acrylic on paper

100 x 70 cm (39 3/8 x 27 9/16 in.)

Ten red, blue and yellow rectangular marks draw a regular grid on each canvas of this triptych. The title of the painting itself, Empreintes de pinceau n° 50 à intervalles de 30 cm, describes the simple principle of this creation: the red marks of the same brush are presented on paper at regular 30 cm intervals.

Pioneer in the practice of “work – painting”, Toroni worked all his life producing paintings according to a similar pictorial process. Working on a variety of surfaces, like canvas, fabric, the floors or even the walls of the exhibition hall, his paintings feature marks as repetitive as they are essentially unique.

The result of a methodical work, between reiteration and variation, the painting Empreintes de pinceau n° 50 à intervalles de 30 cm, by Niele Toroni was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
