Empreintes de pinceau n° 50 à intervalles de 30 cm

1976

Acrylic on oilcloth, wooden support, thin metal staple

100 x 75 cm (39 3/8 x 29 1/2 in.)

Eight black marks in a quincunx pattern: as the title announces, in Empreintes de pinceau n° 50 à intervalles de 30 cm, these marks – made with the same number 50 brush – are exactly 30 cm apart. The presence of the support is truly vital, as the waxed canvas shines and deceives its solid white appearance in a moving shimmer.

Created on various surfaces, like canvas, fabric, the walls of the exhibition or the floors, Niele Toroni’s a priori repetitive works interact with space. Rejecting all painting idealism, Toroni cofounded BMPT, an ephemeral group of four artists who attempted to question critically the authenticity and meaning of pictorial work.

The painting Empreintes de pinceau n° 50 à intervalles de 30 cm by Niele Toroni was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” (“Hanging”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
