American, born in 1974 & Cuban, born in 1971
American and Cuban artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla have collaborated with each other since 1995, taking an experimental, multidisciplinary approach to their work. They explore political and social themes such as nationalism, authority, democracy and consumerism.
Using and trying to mix various media such as sculpture, photography, sound, video and performance, they question narrative conventions as well as the potential of language and materials. They weave historical, cultural and political metaphors to illustrate the complex relationships between objects and meaning.
Allora and Casadilla’s video Returning a Sound is in the Pinault Collection. It was shown during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
