Yang
Chinese, born in 1971
Although he trained to be a painter, Yang Fudong is a photographer, video artist and filmmaker now recognised as one of the leading contemporary Chinese artists of his generation. His work explores the human condition, which he approaches through the lens of a dramatic relationship to existence, a challenge that requires individuals to surpass their limits.
A portraitist of a generation torn between traditional Chinese values and modernity, he was one of the first artists in his country to fully immerse himself in Western culture, especially film. His work is characterised by a dreamlike visual language and figures with slow, choreographed movements, as if time could stand still.
Yang Fudong's work was shown by the Pinault Collection for the first time during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
