Chinese painter Liu Da Hong explored the landscapes and folklore of his hometown Qingdao, located on the Yellow Sea, before developing his pictorial technique inspired by the great Dutch masters. Since moving to Shanghai, where he now lives and works, the megalopolis has been his creations’ starting point.
Liu Da Hong subsequently became interested in video, a medium he uses both as a tool for reflection and as a means of documenting the most common cultural practices of communist China. Popular traditions, events of the Maoist period and contemporary Chinese society provide this painter, who is passionate about history, with his favourite materials.
Liu Da Hong's three-dimensional animated video Setting-up Exercises to Radio Music, which is in the Pinault Collection, was shown during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
