Cantor
Childhood memories of the Ceausescu era play a key role for Romanian-born visual artist Mircea Cantor. They are the starting point for many of his works. The formal experimentation in his highly poetic, meaningful videos and installations have strong political overtones, attesting to his stand against "annihilating" globalisation in the form of a universal language made up of simple gestures.
When Cantor trained to become an artist in the 1990s, he met others who had resisted the dictatorship. Their testimonies are the basis of his reflections on the complexity of history, the present and their depictions. In his reflexive works, he poses as an impartial observer of the social and cultural mores he encounters in various countries. He sees himself as a nomad trying to highlight points of convergence as well as points of rupture.
Cantor's video Vertical Attempt is in the Pinault Collection. It was shown as part of the 2012 exhibition “Parole des Images” (“Word of Images”) devoted to the moving image, at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
