Fascinated by changes in an increasingly capitalist China, Cao Fei makes videos and installations that reflect the dreams and expectations of connected urban Chinese youth. Combining a documentary approach with the exaltation of globalised pop culture, his work highlights the paradoxes and hopes of a society where technology is increasingly transforming the relationship to reality.
For over a decade, Cao Fei has explored the virtual world’s potential. He is interested in the links it allows him to forge between artistic communities around the world. In 2008, she founded RMB City on the online platform Second Life, through her avatar China Tracy, in order to foster creative synergy and open up a space for collectively rethinking forms of urbanisation.
Cao Fei’s video Whose Utopia Installation, which is in the Pinault Collection, was presented during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
