Tayou

Cameroonian, born in 1967

Pascale Marthine Tayou, a Cameroonian-born self-taught artist, feminised his first name to free himself from having been assigned the gender of male. His hybrid creations highlight the contradictions of identity in a context of postcolonial globalisation.

A nomadic, intuitive artist, Tayou works in several media. In his never-ending quest to cross borders, he works with drawing, video, photography, sculpture, performance and installation. Forging links with his personal experience, his African roots and his dashed hopes, he strives to redefine postcolonial issues based on his experience of Western culture and his travels.

The installation Colonie de foulards (“Colony of Scarves”), which is in the Pinault Collection, was presented during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
