What is the sublime in contemporary society? This question obsesses Belgian photographer, video artist and director Johan Grimonprez. Drawing on media archaeology, he explores the tension between intimacy and globalisation. Suggesting new narrative forms, his work exalts reality’s multifaceted nature.
Grimonprez is interested in our relationship with globalised information, celebrity and appearances. The scripts of his films are based on hijacking and subverting the meaning of reading. A brilliant collage artist, he mixes all sorts of sources and assembles his shots with pre-existing video or literary quotations, subverting the images and thereby encouraging us to deconstruct our relationship to them.
Grimonprez’s film Double Take, which is in the Pinault Collection, was shown during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
