Francis
Alÿs

Belgian, born in 1959

Francis Alÿs left his native Belgium for the intense heat of Mexico City, an exile who has made wandering a discipline of the gaze. The city’s ebb and flow, urban decay and disorder, marginalisation and homelessness are all sources of inspiration, pretexts for a humanistic art where the idea of vulnerability has a key place.

His wanderings through Mexico City, a city he perceives as a "paradigm of the urban environment", are an opportunity for him to capture the unexpected, initially through note-taking, drawing, collage and painting. These images made on the spot inspire his performances, which he sometimes shoots in videos, not to freeze them, but to make them accessible to as many people as possible.

Francis Alÿs’ animated film Song for Lupita, which is in the Pinault Collection, was shown during the 2009 exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
