Alongside his military career, self-taught Saudi artist Abdulnasser Gharem creates conceptual works that question contemporary society’s relationship to art, cultural heritage and politics.
He works in various media including photography, video and performance to offer a social critique. He often involves the actors and communities he stages in his creative process. As a lieutenant-colonel in the Saudi army, control and authority are recurring leitmotivs in his work. It has a strong relationship to history, on which the traditional art to which he refers is often based.
His video Siraat (The Path) is in the Pinault Collection. It was shown in 2012 during the exhibition devoted to the moving image, "Parole des Images" (“Word of Images”) at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
