Khan

Egyptian, born in 1975

Hassan Khan made his mark as an experimental music and video pioneer on Cairo's underground scene. He subsequently developed a multidisciplinary approach as a visual artist that includes performances, photography, video, sound and architectural installations. Combining these media is a way for him to develop an endless range of creative possibilities.

Largely focusing on Cairo, his adopted city, his work poetically and critically documents his cultural identity, stressing the popular dimension. Egyptian street dances and music, such as châabi, are among his favourite sources of inspiration.

Khan's spellbinding video Jewel is in the Pinault Collection. It was shown during the 2012 exhibition “Parole des Images” (“Word of Images”) devoted to the moving image, at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
