American, born in 1961

Zoe Leonard is a self-taught photographer committed to feminist issues and the fight for gay rights. Much of her work focuses on questions of gender. Her photographs of anatomical models, fashion shows, exhibitions and nature in Alaska are also part of a careful reflection on framing, classification and the gaze.

Photography and the process of creating an image are at the heart of a long period of reflection that she compares to writing. She implements a true photographic ethic where framing reveals her presence and subjectivity. She seldom crops and reframes her silver prints, which she chooses from many rolls. Her works take into account the subject, her point of observation and the relationship between the viewer and the world.

Leornard's works in the Pinault Collection were first exhibited at Palazzo Grassi in the 2012 show Paroles des images (“Words of Images”).
