Danish, born in 1917
Henrik Olesen's installations bring together a wide variety of media, from sculpture to collage, posters and text. They explore power structures and standardised, established knowledge systems through references to legal codes, the natural sciences, capital distribution and art history.
Olesen continually addresses the issues of self-construction and sexuality in different forms. In his opinion, the human body in the West is subject to familial, cultural and social rules based on a hetero-centric viewpoint terrorized by gender diversity. Olesen aims to foster debates that are absent from the public arena, such as the persistent criminalisation of homosexuality. Made up of commonplace objects, his bodies are multiplied, sexualised and mapped.
Oleson’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2015 exhibition "Slip of the Tongue" at the Punta della Dogana.
