Haim
Steinbach

Israeli, born in 1944

The installations of Haim Steinbach are arrangements of objects of common use – shelves, tables, containers, doors, packets of laundry detergent, pairs of trainers, etc. – as well as their own exhibiting device. The artist’s intervention on these artefacts and their placement in the museum context elevate them as actual contemporary still lifes.

By using objects of daily life, Steinbach engages in a reflection on the selection, organisation and presentation of objects evoking different cultures. He gives their intrinsic meaning a shape, whether it’s psychological, ritual or aesthetic.

The first solo exhibition dedicated to Haim Steinbach was held in 1988 at the Bordeaux Contemporary Art Museum. In 2013 and 2014, his personal exhibition “Once again the world is flat” was presented at the Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, at the Serpentine Gallery in London and at the Kunsthalle Zurich. His work was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
