Ray
Charles Ray’s unique work has helped to reshape the outlines of visual figuration. His sculptures, including Family Romance (1993) and Boy with Frog (2009), both of which are in the Pinault Collection, question the space and reality around us as well as how we perceive them. The technical precision and "strange familiarity" of Ray's works both throw the viewer off balance.
Ray was a minimal artist before turning to figurative art in the 1980s. Sculpture enables him to explore the tension between the human figure and space, whether physical or mental. Inspired by Greco-Roman sculpture, Auguste Rodin and Giacometti, his work gradually grew more radical until it became monochrome, smooth and devoid of attributes.
Ray's works in the Pinault Collection have been exhibited on numerous occasions at the Punta della Dogana, the Palazzo Grassi and outside their walls.
