Yang
Chinese, born in 1956
Influenced by Chinese calligraphy and thought, Yang Jiechang creates works that explore the history, movement and the passing of life. His ink paintings on silk, videos, performances, photographs and installations highlight the tensions between human existence and our times.
Born in 1956 in Southern China's Guangdong province, Yang Jiechang studied at the Canton Academy of Fine Arts and became interested in Taoism and Zen Buddhism. Long after the Cultural Revolution, which left a mark on him, and during the events in Tian'anmen Square, he went to Germany and France, where he came to prominence at the "Les Magiciens de la Terre" (“The Magicians of the Earth”) show in Paris in 1989. “Space and time do not change,” he says. “It is Man who should change".
Yang Jiechang's works in the Pinault Collection were presented during the “Qui a peur des artistes ?” ("Who’s Afraid of Artists?”) show at the Palais des Arts in Dinard in 2009 and the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice in 2011-2012.
