Ivorian, 1923 — 2014
Artist and ethnologist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré took the pseudonym “Cheik Nadro” (The One Who Never Forgets) after he had a divine vision in 1948. He was interested in the recording, codification and archiving of knowledge, particularly in his native Bété tribe.
Bruly Bouabré was born in 1923 in Zéprégühé, Ivory Coast, and died in 2014. He was interested in all areas of knowledge - art, poetry, tradition and legends, religion and philosophy. From the 70s, the artist spent day after day working on what would come to be called World Knowledge, a piece that he would continue right up until his death. Bruly Bouabré used a consistent format: one small image surrounded by a border of text, drawn in ballpoint pen or pencil on paper. He would produce over one thousand of them. Cheik Nadro made it his mission, through his work, to reunite and pacify humanity.
The artist’s work in the Pinault Collection was presented at the Palazzo Grassi at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition in (2011-2012).
