Chinese, born in 1964

Tradition and modernity blend into one in the troubling virtuoso paintings of Zeng Fanzhi. Poetic or harrowing, they invite the viewer to probe the hidden depths of reality.

The works of Zeng Fanzhi can be categorised by periods of his life: each series is clearly distinguished and inspired by his environment, experience and perception. In the mid-1990s, the Chinese artist produced a series of paintings, les Masques (The Masks) (1994-2000), that would take his career to an international level. The characters all wear the same white mask with a large smile, disturbingly merging into the features of their face. More recently, particularly in pieces made for the Palazzo Grassi showing landscapes, Fanzhi tends towards abstraction, using a staunchly expressionist technique.

The artist’s works in the Pinault Collection were shown at the Palazzo Grassi at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition (2011-2012).
