Kishio
Suga

Japanese, born in 1944

Starting from natural and industrial materials, Kishio Suga creates sculptures and installations that examine the physical presence of the object in its environment: this intense spatial research finds its most absolute form in works he designs specifically for their exhibition space. Another key aspect of his work, the relationship between work and being materialises even in performances, during which he changes his works.

Kishio Suga began producing and exhibiting his work as a member of Mono-ha, a Tokyo-based movement active in the 1960s and 1970s. The experimental work by Suga and Mono-ha shares common themes with contemporary art movements like post-minimalism, land art and Arte Povera.

The work of Kishio Suga, a key figure of Japanese contemporary art was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the “Prima Materia” (“Raw Material”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana. One of his retrospective exhibitions was held at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art in 2015.
