Monk
British, born in 1969
In 2009, Jonathan Monk said: "Appropriation is something I’ve used or worked on with my art since starting art school in 1987. Then (as now), I realised it was nearly impossible to be original, so I tried to use what was already available as material for my own work.”
Monk uses sculpture, video and photography. Between conceptual art and appropriation, he constantly refers to the world of contemporary art, mixing homage and humour. In 2009, Deflated Sculpture recalled Jeff Koons' work, recreating the stainless steel rabbit by showing it in different stages of collapse. He also appears in ironic performances, such as waiting in airport lobbies for dead celebrities or movie stars (Waiting for Famous People, 1995-1997).
Monk's work, which is in the Pinault Collection, was presented during the 2014 "Art Lovers" show at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.
