Hiroshi
Sugimoto

Japanese, born in 1948

Most of Hiroshi Sugimoto's photographs are based on the great tradition of classical painting. The Japanese artist works in very large darkrooms with extremely long exposure times. This photographic technique allows extraordinary precision. The time and patience required to make his works give them the singular grace of a suspended moment.

Sugimoto's work is both conceptual and poetic. He explores the ideas of time, light, and space while anchoring his photographs in art history, especially Western and Japanese painting. In doing so, he made photography the heir to classical history painting.

Sugimoto's photographs in the Pinault Collection were exhibited for the first time in Lille during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage du Temps”) show at the Tri Postal.
