Ruppersberg
American, born in 1944
Allen Ruppersberg has pursued a language-based conceptual approach since the late 1960s. It questions transmission in every field of knowledge. However, his work seems impossible to situate because it is so eclectic. The American artist describes himself primarily as a reader.
Ruppersberg is a collector at heart: he accumulates knowledge from scholarly and popular culture without distinction and forms intimate relationships with the content he saves. His work reflects his intimate, personal journey into knowledge while transposing and recycling some of his own pieces. His complex, polymorphic works question the boundary between reality and fiction and between the individual and society.
Ruppersberg's works in the Pinault Collection were presented for the first time during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage of Time”) show at the Tri Postal in Lille.
