Wilcox
American, born in 1965
T.J. Wilcox’s videos tie small stories to history. He mixes archival images from television news and films with his own footage and animated sequences to create narratives based on historical events. The American artist confronts his imagination with popular iconography, for example, in his work The Funeral of Marlene Dietrich. Many superimposed meanings reveal a new, original reading of historical events.
T. J. Wilcox works with a 16mm camera, giving the film a particular texture. The shaky images create a slight sense of instability for the viewer. He also deliberately bleaches the film, adding a melancholy filter.
The works of T.J. Wilcox were presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage of Time”) show in Lille at the Tri Postal.
