Anna
Gaskell

American, born in 1969

Since the 1990s, Anna Gaskell has explored, through photography and video, the supernatural in fantasy literature and fairy tales. Taking a psychoanalytical approach, she highlights its worrying aspects. Particularly influenced by Bettelheim's tales, she digs into their disquieting strangeness through bold framing, sometimes-unreal lighting and frightening settings.

The main characters in her works are pretty young women. She offers reflection on how to stage these bodies between two ages. Her models are disturbing by displaying the in-between age of adolescence, between innocence and sensuality.

Gaskell's works in the Pinault Collection were presented for the first time in Lille at the Tri Postal during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage of Time”) show.
