British, born in 1969

Visual artist and Oscar-winning director (Twelve Years a Slave) Steve McQueen has created a polymorphous, eclectic, committed body of work about despair and utopia in Western societies. Sensitive to today’s problems, the British artist adds a poetic perspective, asking viewers to physically feel the existential situations he weaves through fiction.

McQueen also makes feature films, using more traditional distribution channels to reach a wider audience. They poetically, poignantly evoke individuals’ loss and conquest of freedom, focusing particularly on the impact of domination on the body.

McQueen's videos in the Pinault collection were presented for the first time in Lille during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage of Time”) show at the Tri Postal.
