Dutch, born in 1962
Dutch artist Aernout Mik made his mark on Europe’s art scene in the 1990s and 2000s. He addresses serious issues, but always with a touch of the grotesque and irrational. His installations plunge the viewer into a hypnotic world of spectacular, dangerous architecture. An example is Organic Escalator, a video installation in which the viewer is confronted with a collapsing building.
The videos in Mik's installations follow the conventions of documentary filmmaking but are actually staged by the artist. Space is treated without any narrative logic or regard for gravity. The instability echoes that of human relations, which are at the heart of Mik's work.
Mik's works in the Pinault Collection were presented for the first time during the 2008 “Passage du Temps” (“Passage of Time”) show at the Tri Postal in Lille.
