Grotjahn
Mark Grotjahn’s paintings evoke dizzying dives through space. Perspectives, symmetry and vanishing points combine to create vibrant, organic and labyrinthine compositions. Focusing on the construction of a three-dimensional image on a flat surface, the formal research of the American artist is influenced by both geometric abstraction and futurism.
In particular, since the 1980s, he has explored the influence of multifocal perspective on composition and colour. “Because I have an active and obsessive eye‚ I’m interested in finding as much contentment as I possibly can. In my work I create problems and then solve them in order to feel peace”, he explains. His appetite for shapes has led him to use different media; since the 2000s, Mark Grotjahn has been painting and sculpting masks and exploring the possibilities of software filters for image retouching.
Mark Grotjahn’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
