Armleder

Swiss, born in 1948

From performance to “Furniture Sculpture”, the work of Swiss visual artist John Armleder questions the terms of art appreciation. Since he does not consider work to be unique and indivisible, his research has taken him away from the notion of style and towards prioritising citation. His original approach makes him both a marginal figure and a vital presence on the contemporary scene.

Close to the Fluxus group, the artist co-founded the Ecart collective, a performance space and independent publishing house, in 1969. In the 1980s, he developed an aesthetic of appropriation. By means of addition and juxtaposition, John Armleder conceives installations that mix paintings and objects. These “Furniture Sculptures”, which are intended to be anti-commercial and devoid of any personal stamp, play on a sense of “déjà-vu” and the confusion between art and furniture.

John Armleder’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi.
