French, born in 1949
A horticulturist by training, Bertrand Lavier has been passionate about cross-fertilisation since his career as an artist began in the 1970s. Combining popular imagery, ready-mades in the manner of Duchamp and an interest in everyday items, his unique approach transcends the traditional categories of art.
It took shape in the 1980s with several series that he called "building sites". They are painted objects such as a piano (Gabriel Gaveau) and a medicine cabinet (Manubelge), superimposed, enlarged or taken out of their original contexts. Blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture and installation, Lavier's works play with codes and humorously question the mechanisms of value attribution inherent in the art world.
Born in 1949 in Châtillon-sur-Seine, Lavier creates works that are off the beaten track. The Pinault Collection has several sculptures by this internationally renowned artist, which were first exhibited at the 2014 Palazzo Grassi show in Venice, "L'Illusion des Lumières" (“The Illusion of Lights”).
