Robert
Whitman

American, born in 1935

Robert Whitman creates his “cinema pieces” in the late 1950s, seeking to automatically include the viewer in a participatory logic and to assert them as cinematographic pieces. They are projected in galleries in the format of immersive installations. The artist also ventures into theater, video and installation, and works on sound material, the body and the discourse to create multi-faceted compositions that explore the spatial, temporal and dimensional characteristics of the visible.

A pioneer in the art of performance and multimedia installation, Robert Whitman co-founded the non-profit organization Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), which encourages collaboration between artists and engineers. His qualities as an innovator in research, engineering and art creation have led to questioning the function and areas of activity of art and artists.

Robert Whitman's work was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014.
