L'Illusion des Lumières

Curated by
Caroline Bourgeois
The show was not just about light’s physical and aesthetic aspects. It also addressed the symbolic, philosophical and even political issues at stake in works by around 20 contemporary artists, from pioneers including Julio Le Parc and Dan Flavin to Antoni Muntadas, Marcel Broodthaers, Danh Vo and members of the younger generation such as Latifa Echakhch and Claire Tabouret. Dough Wheeler's blindingly bright Infinity Room disorientates visitors before they start freely moving among the works, which play on contrasts and opposites, white and black, day and night, the visible and the invisible, reality and illusion.
"The Illusion of Light" at the Palazzo Grassi was a milestone in the Pinault Collection’s history in terms of both its theme and its innovative dialogue between several works that had never been seen by the public before.
